I am the Churchill Professor of Mathematics of Information in the
Statistical Laboratory at the University of Cambridge and a Fellow of Darwin College. My research connects information theory, probability and statistics,
with interests ranging from fundamental mathematical questions in information theory
to statistical inference and computation.
Originally from Athens, Greece, I studied mathematics at Imperial
College and Cambridge before undertaking graduate studies at Stanford
University, where I received an MS in statistics in 1997 and a PhD in
electrical engineering in 1998. My academic career has included appointments at
Purdue and Brown, and a visiting appointment at Columbia University. I joined
Cambridge in 2018 as Professor of Information and Communications and Head of the
Signal Processing and Communications Laboratory, before moving to DPMMS in
2020.

HONORS
& FELLOWSHIPS (selected)
I was elected a Fellow of the IEEE in 2011, and a Fellow
of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics in 2023. Earlier research
fellowships include a Sloan Research Fellowship awarded in 2004, and a Marie
Curie Fellowship during 2009–2011. More recently, I was elected a Fellow
of the International Academy of Artificial Intelligence Sciences (AAIS) and of
the International Artificial Intelligence Industry Alliance (AIIA). I held an
endowed Mannin Assistant Professorship [2002 – 2005] and was awarded an
honorary Master of Arts degree ad eundem, both at Brown University.
