2022 Summer school survival guide

  1. You will have been given a maths computer account. The id is the same as your crsid but you have to set the password. You do so here.
  2. Ask your supervisor for a computer and desk/office. If none are available then you will have to make do with using ssh or hotdesk (our remote desktop service) from your own personal device(s).
  3.  Your Maths account comes with 5GB of disk quota. If you need more space for storing large datasets the alternatives are described here. use of /store is recommended.
  4. If you need more processing power then you can use beehive. If you need more processing power then please ask your supervsior to request an account for you on fawcett. Your supervisor can also tell you if your research group has any high specification computers of it's own.
  5. Many tasks require you to be on the Maths network. If you are connected remotely then you may find it helpful to set up a VPN connection.

Common problems

  1. If you cannot login to a computer it may be an issue with your password, the computer, or your access permissions. Seek help from Maths IT.
  2. If you were able to login and then couldnt you may have exceeded your quota. In this event ssh logins should still work and you can use the quota command to check. If you are over quota delete or remove some files. If that doesnt solve the problem, please contact Maths IT.
  3. Printing from personal devices to maths printers is troublesome. Consider using our webprint service which requires you to be on the Maths network (so you will need the VPN)
