John Thompson will be 70 in October 2002. To celebrate the occasion, we are organizing a conference at the CMS in Cambridge, from 26th to 29th September 2002. The conference will start on Thursday 26th in the early afternoon, and finish on Sunday 29th before lunch.
The speakers will include Aschbacher, Conway, Feit, Glauberman, Guralnick, Lyons, Meierfrankenfeld, Robinson, Serre, Stellmacher, Volklein and Zelmanov.
The special Conference dinner will be held at Gonville and Caius College on Saturday evening. The cost of the dinner will be in the region of £30. The suggested dress for this dinner is a jacket and a tie.
The conference will take place at the Centre for Mathematical Science, Wilberforce Road, Cambridge. The main entrance to the building is located in Clarkson Road, next to the Newton Institute. In fact, the Newton Institute web site contains a map and useful travel information - see www.newton.cam.ac.uk/travel . At the top of that page, you can click on maps, too.
There are two types of accommodation (one will have been arranged for those who have asked for it). Some accommodation will be in Wolfson Court, which is a part of Girton College, and is located in Clarkson Road, next to the Newton Institute. This accommodation is mainly in single study bedrooms with shared bathroom and costs 25 pounds B&B per night (there may be a slight surcharge for those staying just one night). There are very few self-contained rooms there, which cost 35 pounds B&B per night. Most of you will be staying at New Hall, which is located in Huntington Road, about 10 minutes walk from the CMS. This accommodation is of higher standard and is more expensive. The cost of a single room is £51.50, the cost of a twin room is £77.25. The accommodation has to be paid on arrival when registering in the CMS on Thursday.
Lunch on Friday and Saturday will be available for everyone at Wolfson Court. The cost of the lunch is £10. You will have to purchase a ticket for lunch while registering on Thursday.
There will be a registration fee of £10 payable. This and other costs will have to be covered while registering in the CMS on Thursday. Unfortunately only British pounds can be used, cheques or cash. In fact, I gather now that cheques in US dollars are also acceptable.
