Winton Centre for Risk and Evidence Communication

The Department of Pure Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics is now host to a new centre - the Winton Centre for Risk and Evidence Communication. Headed by Chairman Professor Sir David Spiegelhalter, it aims to ensure that the quantiative evidence on important issues is presented in a clear and balanced way. The Centre will carry out research in association with the Department of Psychology to understand how we all make decisions in order to develop the very best ways to present data, and will work with journalists to help spread best practice across the globe, to help us all form opinions and make decisions based on the very best evidence available.

The team will be working on large collaborative projects, such as one to rework an NHS website presenting to both doctors and patients the potential benefits and harms of various treatment options for women with breast cancer, as well as holding regular ‘clinics’ designed to give quick advice to academics and others who have complex data that they want to be able to present in a clear and balanced way, and producing quick turn-around comment any time that quantitative evidence is poorly - or brilliantly - represented in the media.
