Department of Pure Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics

Research Interests: I have worked in three general areas: ancient Greek mathematics (on what might be called 'proof theory' before Euclid), Renaissance mathematics (the changing status of mathematics and the mathematical arts in the Renaissance) and Enlightenment mathematics (the dissemination and teaching of the calculus in 18th century France.
I also have a continuing side interest in later 18th and early 19th century mathematics at Cambridge, and the origins of early Islamic science and mathematics.
