Department of Pure Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics

Applications are invited for a three year Research Associate position in the Department of Pure Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics, Cambridge. The position is funded by the ERC Advanced Grant 'Mirror Symmetry in Algebraic Geometry' held by Prof. Mark Gross. The successful candidate will have a PhD in a subject close to algebraic geometry. The applicant must also have a demonstrable research track record in algebraic geometry or a related discipline, and it is essential that they have experience of working in one or more of the following areas: explicit constructions in algebraic geometry; toric or tropical geometry; mirror symmetry (including the Gross-Siebert program); symplectic aspects of mirror symmetry; Gromov-Witten theory.

The successful candidate must be committed to conducting research related to the Gross-Siebert program and should display clear evidence of promise and originality in research, as well as having a good publication record. A high degree of self-motivation and independence will be required. They will also be expected to work effectively within a team, have the ability to develop and apply new concepts, and have a creative approach to problem-solving. Demonstration of excellent verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to write clearly and succinctly for publication will be expected. They may be asked to assist in the supervision of student projects, the development of student research skills, and plan and deliver seminars relating to the research area.
