Teaching
I am the Director of Studies in Mathematics at Murray Edwards College, Cambridge. You can find us on Facebook. The college website has some information for potential applicants, and some recommended reading. I am always happy to hear from people considering applying to study Mathematics at Murray Edwards College.
In the Easter Term 2012, I am lecturing a non-examinable course on Waring's Problem. Here is the page for the course.
In the Michaelmas Term 2011, I lectured Part II Number Theory. Here is the page for the course.
Here are some resources (in no particular order) that my students might find useful.
- My blog, Theorem of the Week, which has discussions of a variety of theorems.
- My quizzes page, which I hope may provide another useful tool for getting to grips with mathematical ideas.
- Professor Tim Gowers has some very readable discussions of various mathematical ideas, many relevant to Tripos courses. There are more recent discussions in a similar vein on his blog.
- The DPMMS (Pure Maths) teaching page.
- The corresponding DAMTP (Applied Maths) teaching page.
- The Cambridge Faculty of Mathematics undergraduate studies page.
- Part III (Master of Mathematics/Master of Advanced Study).
- The Cambridge Skills Directory for Undergraduates – a good place to look for resources to help you with your studies.
- On the subject of mathematical study skills, I recommend How to Think Like a Mathematician, by Kevin Houston (published by CUP). This has lots of really excellent advice for someone just starting to study mathematics at university level, including plenty of exercises. There is a short leaflet online with a few top tips from the book.
- Terry Tao has some career advice on his blog, including advice for students.
- Gareth Taylor has a handy IB course-o-meter.
And here are some additional resources that students about to come to Cambridge might find useful. (New students at Murray Edwards College will also be sent some further interesting problems!)
- The Murray Edwards College Mathematics reading list.
- The Mathematics Workbook for new students.
- stemNRICH has resources that will be useful for students about to start a maths degree. In fact, there is a page just for such people.
- NRICH also has an Interactive Workout for those wanting to brush up on their A level skills. Good practice!
If you have a suggestion for something else that should be on this list, please let me know!
