Non-maths

I do some things other than maths.  I play the oboe, cor anglais and piano, and have a guitar that I have been trying to teach myself to play.  I also enjoy walking, talking to cats (yes, I do mean that), listening to Radio 4, and attempting The Times crossword.  The rest of this page consists largely of links to sites that have nice pictures!

I like the Hebrides very much indeed and have spent many happy holidays there, often on Skye, and sometimes on other islands too.  I visited Orkney in August 2004, which was interesting, but I keep finding myself drawn back to the Hebrides.  Here are some sites related to the area (to varying extents):

My family has a Heard 28, a Falmouth working boat.  She is a rather lovely gaff cutter (a type of sailing boat).  Despite her traditional appearance, she is made from GRP rather than wood.  I believe that the original mould was taken from one of the Falmouth working boats.  She was launched in the summer of 2002, and is called Victoria Ruth.  There is a picture of her here.  The previous Victoria Ruth was an Oystercatcher 16 (a rather smaller boat in a very similar style).

Here are a couple of pictures taken as we participated in the Round the Island race.  The first shows the crew hard at work at the helm and keeping a look out (while the skipper took the photo).  The second shows where we were going at the time (note the Needles in the background).  It also shows the difficulties of roller furling on the jib!

I like to look at the Lakeland Cam, with photos of the Lake District, updated on a daily basis.  Well worth a look.  I also like the Hampshire Cam; I come from Hampshire.  Finally, I recommend the Skye webcam, showing the view from the Gaelic College.
