Why do we not speak German

Americans are fond of telling Brits that it's thanks to them that we are not speaking German.
Well no, actually. Ask any German: the Russians are the reason why we aren't speaking German.
The Americans, in fairness, might be the reason why we aren't speaking Russian;
they're sure-as-hell the reason why we are no longer speaking English.
