Sunday, at the end of week 21, I arrived at the house to discover the second story (i.e., the attic floor) was completely missing. This was a bit of a surprise. Of course, the rafters and roof joists were going to go, as well as the south gable wall. The surprise was that the north wall was also gone: we had just discussed a week and a half earlier that the engineer thought the north wall was stable. I found out later from my builder that the wall had in fact collapsed when they removed the joists. So I guess it wasn't stable after all. It was in any event dramatic to have open air starting right at the top of the familiar bedroom.
