Notes on the 2009 Linux machines at DPMMS

  • In case of a strange desktop:
NB the following will remove your individual configuration. Thus any special behaviour that you deliberately specified in the old system -- favoured applications, window behaviour etc -- will be lost. It can then be re-specified in the new system.

You might wish to print this message before starting.

Log out so that the login screen appears. Press Ctrl-Alt-F2 to get a text screen saying something like "sparrow login:". Log in. Type dpmms-gnome-move at the command prompt (not dpmms-gnome-backup as some versions of the printout said). Type exit. Press Ctrl-Alt-F7 to recover the graphical login screen. Log in. You should get the proper desktop.

If you still have trouble, contact Andrew Aitchison.
